…in the podcasts, you’ll hear about the “British” and “African” breakfast and, the “colonisers” in the kitchen… about the art of mixing cultures… equal rights and respect in the community… be it in known or, in radically new circumstances of life…

Erstes Treffen

  First Yes-Afrika Women's Forum

On 23. August, the Yes-Afrika e.V. invited for its first Yes-Afrika Women's Forum. The event was organized by Yes-Afrika members Yvonne, Glory and Claudia. We celebrated the day in a full house, with lively participation of women from the community, and our table of refreshment was overflowing with food all the women had brought along to share. The idea of the event was to introduce the Club, Yes-Afrika e.V., and ourselves as women members of the club, to whom the women from the community can come with their questions, ideas, needs and projects.

Yvonne and Claudia gave two little presentations about their fields of interest and expertise, and offered their advice and assistance in these areas. Yvonne gave a presentation about Bilingualism: How do we raise our children as confident communicators in more than one language and more than one culture. Claudia explained how she got to work in Africa and with African people, talked about the importance of documenting the diversity of African culture, and how we can go about as Africans in Germany, documenting our activities and events with our own recordings. These sessions were followed by an open exchange and feedback from all the women.   We made audio recordings of our opening and closing prayers and songs, and of the feedback from the women.

At the beginning of the event, we had listened to recordings on the All Africa Sound Map from the first "Know me - I know you" party of Yes-Afrika, almost a year back (24 Aug. 2013). Soon our recordings from the Women's Forum will also be archived on the map. The history of the African community in Hamm leaves its traces on the map of the city - as you can hear…

Stay tuned for further activities and events via the Yes-Afrika e.V. page on FB!   As invitation for the event, we produced an audio CD of recordings with African women in Hamm, and women in various African countries. We gave the CD to African Women in Hamm.
